Citizenship
Doing your part to better
your community, school, and home.
Guidance Classes:
In guidance classes we focus on actions that each student can take to improve the following areas:
Community - where you live, church, social groups
School - in and outside the classroom
Home - volunteering to help before you are asked to do so
To help with explanation and definitions, we use books and activities described below.
The Biggest and Brightest Light: A True Story of the Heart By: Marilyn Perlyn
This is a true story of a 6 year old girl named Amanda who made a difference in so many people's lives as she tried to help her teacher adjust to the death of her daughter. It demonstrates caring and focuses on the quote "Happy, happy, is the day when you help someone in a special way."
Citizenship Flag: What makes you proud?
Students have the opportunity to make a flag that shows what they are proud of in their school, home, and community. They can choose to color, cut out magazine pictures or write what makes them the proudest in each of the three areas. Please take the time to talk with your student about what he/she should be proud of and how these characteristics make him/her a good citizen.
Good Citizen Badge
Laws in our communities are guidelines we need to follow just like rules in our school and home. Students are given a blank badge with several pieces around it that may or may not have examples of good citizenship rules. They work with a partner to read each piece and color the pieces that have examples of good citizenship. They then cut out the pieces and work together to glue the puzzle on the badge outline.

At Home:
For many students the first experience being a citizen of any community is being a part of school. There are norms in school about following rules, being respectful, responsible, demonstrating work ethic, and even a connection of something to be proud of - Go VIkings!!! While these are very important aspects to being a citizen it can be difficult to see the transition and application to community and home. Of course there are rules at home and often chores to help with development of responsibility, however home can be the prime place to increase the other major aspect of citizenship: SERVICE TO OTHERS.
Since this is the season for giving there are several opportunities for you and your family to show service to others. I have listed a few below. Please talk to your child about the opportunities to volunteer and allow him/her to choose some to do. This increases the sense of pride and the good feeling that comes from the service side of citizenship.
Please remember that you are your child's most important role model.

Community Awareness
The attached worksheet (below) has great questions that helps kids learn about what a community is and important safety information. Would be a great way to start a conversation with your child!
House Rules
Ever want an opportunity to go over house rules and maybe calm the chaos? The second page of the attached document is a simple outline that you and your child can do together to talk about expectations at home. It is a great chance to remind your child that being a good citizen includes doing what is best for your community, school, and HOME!
